We All Breathe the Same Air

These are my explorations and reflections on International current affairs. For my IS 393 class at NCSU.

Rafael Aguilera, Sube Ritmo and Nazaare at NCSU’s Somos Una Familia event. Put on by Mi Familia at NC State.

Somos Una Familia 2013 at NC State

Somos Una Familia is a yearly event that occurs at and is held by NC State University . It is a Hispanic cultural event that celebrates Hispanic culture, and encourages those from other cultures to come together. The event was put on by an NCSU group called Mi Familia, which translates to “my family” in English. Somos is a performance based event, that hosted many various types of performing artists. From singers to rappers to dance groups. It was beautiful to see all the different people come together to celebrate not only the Hispanic culture, but all cultures together.

One of my favorite performances was from Rafael Aguilera and his crew. He provided smooth and rhythmic Latino beats and after a few songs, encouraged the crowd to participate and dance to the music. I love how they included the mainly Hispanic crowd’s passion for dance with their passion for music. It was Beautiful to watch.

My other favorite performances were both from two known dance groups at NCSU: Nazaare and Sube Ritmo. Nazaare is a Bollywood dance team, that stands for the message Mi Familia was attempting to get across. Bollywood is typically known as being an Indian dance, however they have many members who are not indeed Indian. They also include parts of other dance styles in their number, from hip-hop to Latin  Their set was fairly long, but entertaining the whole way through. The dancers worked very hard for this performance, which showed from the sweat on their brow, and the relief on their faces when the audience applauded throughout the set and at the end.

My last favorite performance was from Sube Ritmo, as mentioned before. They are a Latin dance team from NCSU. They were very suave with their dance moves. Their dance sets were sensual, and kept you guessing at what moves they were going to wow you with next. They are the group I look up to for inspiration when I dance, and/or come up with Latin based choreography.

What I took away from this event is that there can, in fact, be respect and exchange between many cultures. I was excited to see that very concept come together into fruition before my very own eyes. I was excited to be a part of it last year. This year however, they truly outdid themselves in their goals to celebrate the Hispanic cutlure, and bring other cultures together. I am excited to see what happens next year.
